A 25-year-old woman from Costa Rica, Sol Vargas Garita, has captured global attention after security footage surfaced showing her instinctively using jiu-jitsu–style moves to stop a purse snatcher in Pérez Zeledón. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of September 2nd at La Estación, a 24-hour restaurant near Escalante Pradilla Hospital.
The Incident
While waiting for her breakfast after her work shift, Vargas noticed a man grabbing her purse at the counter.
“Nobody was in the restaurant. This guy grabs my purse and I see him and I say, ‘he can’t take it,’” she told TV Sur.
In an extraordinary display of reflex and courage, she grabbed him, threw him to the ground, and restrained him using what onlookers described as a submission hold. The suspect was immobilized until police arrived and sustained injuries in the process.
Instinct Over Training
Remarkably, Vargas had never trained in martial arts.
“It was a quick reaction on my part. I don’t know anything about that. That’s what came out of me naturally,” she said.
Even her mother recognized the move as resembling Brazilian jiu-jitsu or similar grappling styles—but Vargas insists it was instinct, not training, that drove her response.
Community Reaction & Viral Fame
Restaurant owner Francisco Bermúdez was stunned:
“I was speechless—it surprised me as much as everyone else who’s seen the video.”
Unbeknownst to Vargas, the video began spreading rapidly on social media. When she woke up, thousands of messages awaited her.
She also revealed that her purse contained about ₡100,000 CRC (roughly £147), money she had worked hard for and wasn’t prepared to lose.
A Turning Point Toward Self-Defense
The experience has inspired her to seek formal training:
“Now that I know I had the initiative to do these things, I would like to practice some martial art or self-defense, because you never know when something like this could happen.”
